Dazzling Canadian classical crossover soprano Alessandra Paonessa unleashes inviting, modern songs that glide between the past and present day and tell stories of love, loss, longing and joy. Her magnetic stage presence, warm, rounded vocal tone and the kinetic energy that radiates from her recorded and live performances combine to sweep listeners away on vivid adventures through magical realms and beckon audiences deep into her heartfelt inner world. Paonessa’s bell-like clarity allows for bright and fresh interpretations of classical operatic repertoire that demonstrate her impeccable technique and show she has been inspired by celebrated superstars such as Cecilia Bartoli, Katherine Jenkins and Sumi Jo. Her effortless ability to incorporate elements of pop and jazz into her solo material and into collaborations with instrumentalists and other artists showcases her artistic dexterity and welcoming style, which breaks down the emotional walls between audience and singer and introduces the exquisiteness of opera to a new generation of fans.
Alessandra is an international award winning recording artist and classically trained soprano hailing from Toronto, Canada and quickly gaining recognition for her "sweet, pure lyric soprano... and lush, rounded tone" ( Fanfare Magazine 2015). In the fall of 2014, Alessandra released her award winning debut album ‘Remembering Heaven’, an international collaboration featuring the work of British composer, Chris Broom which received a Gold Medal for ‘Best Album’ in the Global Music Awards. Most recently, Alessandra was the recipient of 'Best Female Vocalist' at the Hollywood Music In Media awards that sent her to walk her first red carpet in Hollywood. Other award highlights include 'Best Classical or Instrumental' in the Toronto Independent Music Awards 2015 and 'Best Female Vocal Performance' in the Global Music Awards 2015.
The Arts have always been embedded in Paonessa’s soul. The soundtrack to her childhood home was dramatic, Romantic classical music albums by powerhouse sopranos such as Kathleen Battle and Kiri Te Kanewa. Her father’s career as a visual artist and mother’s love for powerful opera music and jazz made exploring her own soprano range and creative talents irresistible, and she sang along, joining her church’s youth choir at eight and beginning formal voice lessons. As she dove into the operatic genre, she fell in love with its musical purity and theatrical aspects – the hair, the make-up, the costumes and the sets – and decided she wanted the skills needed to fine-tune her technical proficiency and artistic expression in order to excel internationally.
She began her young singing career as part of the Bach Children’s Chorus, performing regularly and building up her musicianship and an appetite for the spotlight. After winning many competitions and excelling in courses at Canada’s esteemed Royal Conservatory of Music as a young adult, Alessandra continued her studies at York Universities, earning a Bachelor of fine Arts in Music. While at York, she won the Sterling Beckwith Award, a prestigious honor given to students who demonstrate great ability and promise in the art of performance. In 2013, she made her European debut as Giuonone and Eumete ( Il Ritorno d'Ulisse In Patria) in Amsterdam, Netherlands as part of an intensive opera training program. Other roles include First Boy ( The Magic Flute) , Fiordiligi ( Cosi Fan Tutte), Sister Osmina ( Suor Angelica) and Annina (La Traviata).
In 2014, she was contacted by British composer Chris Broom, who became enamored with her voice and asked her to record a rendition of his song “Dolce Vento,” which garnered Paonessa a Female Vocalist Gold Medal from the Global Music Awards Honors. This led to a fruitful on-going partnership between the pair and In November of 2014, Alessandra released her debut full-length classical crossover album, Remembering Heaven, which features eight original songs by Broom and the orchestra of Air-Edel Studio in the United Kingdom. The album won several awards and is airing on radio stations across Canada and around the world.
In 2015, Paonessa performed a live concert of themes and soundtracks from favorite films and theater in Dell'Alto Productions, “Songs from the Screen” with guest artists Samuel Bisson, Joshua Tamayo, Sharron Lee and tenor Daevyd Pepper. That same summer Alessandra flew to the UK where she performed 'Oceans Unite' in support of the RNLI.
Most recently Alessandra returned to the UK where she was invited as a guest soprano for Britain X-Factor stars, G4, on their 'Back For Good Tour'. While there her debut album was released to the English audience and jumped position #25 in the Classical Charts UK.
When she is not making music, Paonessa enjoys photography and is also devoted to giving back to her community. She is an ambassador for “Hope for Hearts,” a project in support of Sick Kids Foundation, an organization that inspires communities to invest in health and scientific research in order to improve the lives of children and families in Canada and abroad.
